Can you write cohesive sentences? If you can and have the ability to concentrate on one subject for at least 500 words or so, you can make a living as a writer--and do it right from your home. I swear. I know. I do it.
In most (not all) cases you need to have a good word processor and know how to use spell and grammar check (yes, even the best writer's need a little nudge now and then in both departments). You have to be creative enough to write about subjects you have little to no background on. You have to be good at research. The last two are things you can learn to do with a little practice. Do you want to know what the SINGLE biggest requirement is to be able to work from home as a freelance copywriter? Here it is, I'll tell you...
...are you ready?
You need to be able to make yourself do the work.
Yep, that's it. That's the biggest reason people who seek copy writing as an online career fail. The work is there. Trust me it is there. It may not pay as well as you'd like to start out but as you develop, get regular clients, and get faster and better at the type of writing needed pay scales increase. The most common fail is the ability to sit down and make yourself work amidst a sea of distractions both online and in the home--TV is more fun, friends are more entertaining--none of them will pay you though I can pretty much guarantee it unless you have very needy friends, lol.
